Today marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
This day is dedicated to supporting women, girls, and young women in pursuing careers in science, as well as highlighting their outstanding contributions and achievements across all scientific fields.
UNESCO data show that globally, only one in three researchers is a woman. In Serbia, however, significant progress has been made in achieving more balanced participation of women in science in recent years. The eScience information system indicates that women account for nearly 55% of the total number of active researchers in Serbia.
In terms of participation in projects supported through Science Fund programmes, women make up 59% of the total number of researchers. Women serve as principal investigators on 307 out of 553 projects implemented to date, representing 55.5% of all project leaders.
On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Acting Director of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr. Daria Kisić, stated that the institution strongly supports the equal inclusion of women in the implementation of scientific research.
As she emphasized, women provide strong momentum to the development of Serbian science, thereby contributing to the progress and international reputation of the country.
“I believe that in the coming years an increasing number of girls and women will choose to pursue science and create important scientific results,” Prof. Dr. Kisić noted.
